CHAPTER 13

The previous night had been long and Andrea was still sound asleep when Terri quietly crawled out of bed and made her way to the kitchen. Andrea had taken her to a fabulous Mexican restaurant, where they lingered for quite some time after dinner over shared deep fried ice cream and virgin margaritas. Andrea suggested they stop by a club afterward so that they could dance for a little while and say hi to some of her friends.

They were still at the club for last call and Terri wondered if Andrea had been avoiding going home for some reason. They had a wonderful time, regardless of Andrea’s motives, and Terri was grateful to have met Tammy, whom she immediately thought of her as a friend.

By the time they arrived home, around three in the morning, Terri was exhausted, and Andrea didn’t seem the least bit interested in making love. She wondered if Andrea’s lack of interest was a result of fatigue or the fact that Heather was in the room next to them.

Terri was happily preparing pancakes for breakfast when Heather walked into the kitchen.

“Good morning,” she said to the sleepy-eyed woman.

Heather stared at her for the longest time. Terri was wearing one of Andie’s shirts and the sight brought a flood of memories rushing back to her. How many times had Heather hidden one of Andie’s t-shirts and worn it to school under her sweatshirt? The comfort she felt from the lingering and intoxicating scent that was Andie stayed with her all day.

“Morning,” she replied. Heather wanted to dislike this woman, but she couldn’t. There was nothing to dislike.

“You know, if you throw some chocolate chips in those, Andie will love you forever.” As the words were leaving her mouth, Heather regretted saying them. Why was she telling this woman how to make Andie happy?

“Really?” Terri questioned as she found some chocolate chips and added them to the batter.

“May I ask you a question?” Terri said.

“Sure,” Heather replied hesitantly. She was worried about what Terri might ask. She seemed like the kind of person who wouldn’t pull any punches.

“Are you in love with Andrea?” Terri’s voice was calm and cool. There was no accusation in her voice.

Heather panicked. Her hands began to shake. Beads of sweat formed on her forehead. “God no!” She attempted to sound appalled at the question. “Why would you ask me that?” she replied defensively.

“I don’t know. It’s just that you seem so different when she’s around. Your face lights up. Your breathing changes .”

Heather interrupted her. “Whatever you think you’re seeing, you must be imagining. I’m not in love with Andie.” How could Andie be so clueless about the depths of Heather’s feelings for her and yet, Terri, a perfect stranger, noticed them immediately?

“I’m sorry if I upset you. I just had to ask,” Terri replied before leaving the room, plates of pancakes in hand. She could see right through Heather’s lie and wondered what had happened between these two women who seemed to love each other so much.
